Course description

The course introduces students to philosophy as an academic discipline of study. It attempts to give a general overview of the subject matter of Philosophy. To this end the course will trace philosophical ideas and speculation from the ancient Greeks to the contemporary period.

Course objectives

Studying philosophy should enable the students to:

  1. Become both more rigorous and more tolerant to the ideas of others
  2. Learn to asses constructively beliefs very different from their own
  3. Learn from being criticized by others
  4. Make value judgments and/or informed moral decisions
  5. Critically analyze the basic assumptions that society takes for granted
